This Poor, Traumatized Child

Children are confused enough right now with sexual messages. Let’s not confuse them further.
— National Organization for Marriage

An innocent child has a complete breakdown on his first exposure to same-sex marriage.

UPDATE: It looks like they’ve made the video private, probably because they didn’t realize what a sensation it would be. For those who haven’t seen it, it was an adorable video about a happy kid getting all excited and saying something like, “I’ve never met a husband and husband before! You must be in love,” followed by, “I’m going to play ping pong now. You can play if you want.”

UPDATE II:  Alex has thoughtfully provided a pretty good recollection of the interaction in the comments section below.

When the kid says “You can play too if you want” it always gets me. It’s so honest, so straightforward–it doesn’t mean anything more, and yet it says so much in this context. I’m tempted to say “This kid gets it, why can’t adults?” but what this video really demonstrates is that there’s nothing to understand. Marriage is about people who love each other wanting to share their lives.

Thanks for sharing this — out of the mouths of babes, indeed.

That was GREAT and just like my actual experiences. The kids are surprised at first but immediately adjust. Adults are the ones with the problems.

Seriously? The FIVE YEAR OLD gets it; why is it so hard for so many grown-ups?!

    “So you love each other?”

I haven’t come across many adults who cottoned onto this concept as quickly as the kid did.

It is hard to imagine that the Rev Fred Phelps was once one of these innocent little children… Adults poison their hate less minds.

For those who missed the video, here’s the dialogue, as remembered to the best of my ability. I watched it perhaps a few too many times so this should be pretty accurate.

    Kid: So a husband is a boy…
    Dudes: Yeah.
Kid: So a husband is a boy and a wife is a girl.
    Dudes: Right.
    Kid: So you’re a husband…
    Dudes: We’re both husbands.
    Kid: You’re both husbands…?
    Dudes: Does that confu–
    Kid: SO YOU’RE MARRIED?
    Dudes: Yeah.
    Kid: …That’s funny!
    Dudes: It’s funny, right?
Kid: Wow, I’ve seen husbands and wives before BUT THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I’VE EVER SEEN A HUSBAND AND HUSBAND!!
    Dudes: *crack up with laughter*
Kid: So you love each other?
    Dudes: Yeah.
    Kid: Yeah… you’re much alike.
Kid: Okay, I’m going to go play ping pong now.
    Dudes: Alright.
Kid: *begins to walk out, then stops and turns around* You can play if you want to.

Aww now the video’s been removed. Sad. I really liked it – it seriously brightened my day. Kids rock so much.

For a brief bit, at least, a mirror of the video is here.

Not any more, Makyui. My guess is that the people who posted the video got deluged by hate speech, both in the posted comments and in private messages.
