Religious Freedom Requires Marriage Equality

The Episcopal bishop of Massachusetts has given his priests permission to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies if they wish, though they’re not required to do so. They won’t just be “blessing” a union — they can now officiate at the ceremony.

Next time someone raises the “religious freedom” objection to marriage equality, make sure they know about this, and ask:

So you think churches should be free to marry gays or not, depending on their doctrine? Because the government shouldn’t dictate church policy?

Then thank them for their support.

Uh…yeah, of course. What exactly is your point? Was there ever a time when the government was telling churches that they couldn’t recognize same-sex “marriages”? I think you’re trying to make some kind of htpocrisy argument here, but I don’t quite get it. You’re just talking like a buffooom.

Ben — his point is with regards to the notion that should gay marriages be legalised, churches will be *forced* to recognise and/or perform them against their will. This is of course nonsense, but some people honestly believe that it will happen!

Here in Canada, where same sex marriage has been legal for years. Those who are licensed to preform a marriage ceremony, are given the option and not compelled to preside on a same sex couple if they do not wish too. It has been a good compromise here.
