Protect the Children (and mean it)

The Prop 8 trial, predictably, has shown our opposition spreading this most vicious lie about the LGBT community.

Homosexuals are 12 times more likely to molest children.

This particular version comes from William Tam, who volunteered be a defendant in the trial against Prop 8 and then dropped out, claiming the publicity might lead us to take revenge on him.  Our side called him as a hostile witness anyway, and exposed his hateful ignorance, pathetic illogic, and blind willingness to believe whatever anti-gay crap he reads on the Internet.  Even the Prop 8 lawyers tried to distance themselves from him – during cross-examination, I mean, not during the campaign.  During the campaign they were happy to have him out there spreading this evil.

But the best cure for dishonesty is truth.  We all need to be able to debunk these lies.  I hope this will help.

You can find a transcript of the video here.  I have to give credit to some great resources I used in making this video:

  • Box Turtle Bulletin.  Jim Burroway has put together a thorough analysis of this issue.  He goes into far greater range and depth than I could ever attempt in a 5-minute youtube. He’s distilled a great deal of scholarly research and lists his sources in full detail.  Box Turtle Bulletin has also been the driving force in exposing Uganda’s kill-the-gays legislation. It’s a great site.
  • Dr. Gregory Herek.  This professor at UC-Davis – and witness in the Prop 8 trial – has a wonderful article on the controversy.  The most valuable part, for me, is his systematic dismantling of the research our opponents try to use when demonizing us.

And, as much as I hate it, I suppose I’d best link to one more site.

  • Heteroseparatist.com.  His post, “The Tisinai Formula,” is what really got this video going.  I kind of hate linking to him because it’s probably going to give his blog more attention than it’s even gotten, and he’ll love it. Maybe a little too much. The true reason for his anti-gay crusade should be pretty easy to figure out.

Anyway, thanks for reading the post and viewing the vid.  It was incredibly hard to make.   And I’ll address that in a blog entry soon.

Thank you, Rob, for another well-researched piece; you dedicate so much of your time to fighting our cause with logic and good sense – it’s really appreciated.

I have to admit to checking out The Tisinai Formula despite having a good idea of what to expect; I’d have laughed it off as a satirical work given its nonsensical “logical” extensions, but I see that the post is merely a drop in an ocean of absurdities as far as that site is concerned.

Even my straight colleagues found it too ridiculous to take seriously – perhaps that’s part of the problem; sensible people can laugh it off for what it is, and ill-educated or frightened ignorants take it to heart because it’s what they need.

LOL. Oh, how amusing it was to scroll down that Heteroseparatist b***h’s blog page to see “0 Comments” again and again after almost every entry – as if everything about his feeble, pathetic existence has proven to be virtually obsolete. And the entries that DID have comments? They merely revealed that the only two people who seem to really give a flying f**k about what he has to blabber on about are himself and, well, you. LMAO.

Oh, you have been far, FAR too kind and considerate to pay that waste-of-space any mind, Rob Tish. Because in reality, every once in a great while, that isolated, rejected little douchebag that can be found all alone on the crowded playground? He’s all alone for a good reason. He brought it on himself…

    Glenn I says:

Nicely done. I watched your video after you posted it at Prop8trialtracker in comments.

Because, frankly, investigating the activities of child abusers is not one of my hobbies, you learned me some things. As a gay man, I try to keep an eye on my enemies, but debunking their lies is a Sisyphean task. Their entire case is lies. Knock one down and not only do you have another to contend with, the old one just comes back up later.

This is why whenever they say gay people have done bad things to them I just don’t believe it. Nothing they say is credible. Nothing.

So that Heteroseparatist person says, “When homosexuality is correctly defined as male-on-male sexual intercourse or sexual contact”. Oh really? Is one non-homosexual in between sex acts? That guy is just pathetic.

And I’m now curious about his definition of heterosexuality. :)

Now seriously, I like the video. Simple and clear.

Rob: Thank you so much for this. It’s a great presentation.

I did the same research 30 years ago when I was writing the handbook that was used statewide against the briggs Initiative. Same results. I did a survey of the child molestation literature, including dr. Groth and some statistics from the American Humane association. unfortunately, I lost the study I had done, but I remember it.

According to the AHS study, 90% of molestations were heterosexual in nature– adult men molesting girls. Other figures I had come across led me to believe that the actual figure was closer to 70%. In 75% of all cases, the molester was known to the child, and in 75% of those cases, the molester was the father, step-father, or father surrogate. In other words, in 50% of all of the cases, the molester could only be described as heterosexual in terms of his interests and experiences.

Dr. groth’s studies indicated, as you say, that molesters were either fixed molesters or regressed, the great majority describable as heterosexual in terms of their interests and experiences, the bulk of the rest being molesters who either molested girls primarily, or who were interested in pre-pubescent children of either sex.

The basic conclusions of my survey were: the great majority of molestations were heterosexual in nature, perpetrated either by (primarily) family members, and less likely by strangers who were primarily interested in children. At worst, gay men were no more likely to molest a child than their proportion of the population. At best, and more likely, a minority of gay men were occasionally interested in adolescent males, usually older teenagers– considerably less than their proportion of the population.

In my life, I have known only one man who identified as gay and who was interested in teenage boys. Just one.

I have known two men who were molested by their fathers. For one of them, it was the son’s idea, but dad did nothing to stop it. The other was raped rpepeatedly by his sissy-hating father to show him how bad being a fag could be. Too twisted for words.

Thank you for developing this video and making the video closed captioned. This video, not only educate the hearing community, but as well as the Deaf Community. Great presentation – very clear and easy to understand your message. Keep up the good work. My wonderful openly gay boss posted this link on facebook and so did I.

Ahhh. I’m basking in the glow of your logic and intelligence. Lars says:

The real missunderstanding is not solved in your video: Most people define/reduce Homosexuality through/to the sexual action between individuals. And this leads to misunderstandings like this one. The Quote of Mr. Peter Labarbera ( “Who cares if a man is married ?” ) shows it clearly….

    Carole says:

Great video. Just wanted to add that pedophilia and one’s sexual orientation should be separated, anyway. Pedophilia is a mental problem all its own, in a class all its own. Though most molestations are adult male to a female child, one might go so far as to suggest THAT is heterosexuality or related in some way. I would imagine straights would beg to differ! Just like we dispute the male-on-male child molestation as being homosexual in nature. It’s a sickness. Neither of our communities wants to be associated with it, period.

    rob,

i don’t know if you’ve seen the homoseperatist’s blog recently or not, but he’s posted a challenge to your video, now calling himself a heterojedi with a picture of obi-wan kenobi in en garde. apparently he wants a “yes or no” answer form you to whatever he wants to say to you. he also refers to your email exchange as a “slugfest”.
you may indeed be giving him more attention than he deserves, but he’s also inflating himself beyond who he is.

i’m thankful to you for doing these videos and which expose the grassroots of ignorance wherever they grow.

But Rob? Why won’t you face me? I’ve found inaccuries in your post and I’m waiting for you to respond. Have I not corrected or even deleted posts that you have proven inaccurate? I’m a bit surprised by this avoidance, especially after you have called me a coward. I’m suspending all posts until a certain time so that I can truthfully tell people in the future how you ran from my response to your video. You give me credibility when you hide like this.

    TL says:

Love the article and video but we could start using the word BIGOTRY vs HOMOPHOBIA? The word “bigot” hurts and stings more when someone is called it, especially in public. I believe many anti- gay people could care less about being called a homophobes. I now believe they wear the word as a “badge of honor.” Being called a “bigot” will being shame a embarrassment to those who hate onto the LGBT community . Just as being called a racist has brought many to shame and to submission in the past and present.

    Mack says:

Another thing about the gay=pedophile argument that really bugs me is how it ignores the issue of men molesting girls to the point of defining it out of existence, as if that’s not really pedophilia.
I have to wonder, since a companion argument is that men molest boys in order to recruit them into homosexuality, do they see girls who are molested by men as being recruited into heterosexuality and therefore do not see anything wrong with it?

Rob, thank you! I have installed your video up on my blog where I talk about theis one gay adoptive father who pimped his five-year old son out to creepy pedophiles. Sick and appalling!!! Yet this is just one of how many hundreds or thousands of gay fathers who are the best parents the kids have ever ever had? And how many heterosexual parents have done the same thing? To their own biological kids??? Yet seldom do people intervene on behalf of the kids of heterosexual parents until the parents’ conduct is simply outrageous. The article is here: http://ifpeakoilwerenoobject.blogspot.com/2010/02/is-this-good-for-gays-no.html
