Our Worst Opponents are Our Strangest Strongest Allies

This is why we’ll win:

Who can take this seriously? No one who has a close gay relative, neighbor, friend, or colleague. All we have to do to win is live outside the closet.

Studies show that straights who know gays are far more likely to support equality. Our opponents have never come to grips with this. If we were such villains, you’d expect those who know us the best to fight us the hardest. But it ain’t so. Our enemies rely on ignorance, and we have the power to destroy that ignorance. You’ll never change Pat Robertson’s mind by casually mentioning your weekend plans with your partner. But you might change that undecided middle-of-the-roader in your carpool.

  • I live my life as a LOUD ally. I have a pride sticker on my car. I have buttons on my briefcase. I teach high school and make it a point to include readings that bring us into discussions of equality for EVERYONE – not just GLBTQ folks, but everyone. Dr. King told us that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. When your rights are threatened, so are mine. I don’t speak out because I love people who are gay (though I do); I speak out because it’s the right thing to do.

That is totally bizarre. And I hate to think that he was let in on our secret plot to destroy the american way of life. Who do you think told him? Was it Mary Cheney? I’m still not sure we can trust her. Hmmmmmm. On a more serious note. I too agree that it is very important that every gay person let it be known that they are gay. I am out and proud and I am sure that it makes a difference simply because people have told me that it does. One of my best friends grew up in a small conservative town in Washington and she told me that our friendship really helped to open her eyes and realize that everything that her mother had taught her wasn’t true. She saw that the only thing that she had to fear from gay people was that they might out dress her.

Joe G – what secret plot? How come I wasn’t told?

Also, last time I checked marriage equality in IA was granted by the courts, not the legislature – so someone needs to check their facts before spewing the filth.

I mean the facts are really irrelevant to people such as this. They could tell all of their followers that the gays wanted to fill the oceans with glitter and could only do so by granting themselves rights around the world and they would probably believe it. Ya know what I mean. These peoples don’t care about facts just like they don’t give a damn about the real teachings of jesus. All they care about it power.
