Or perhaps he time traveled back to the 50's. It's ironic that the people who say the children from an inter-racial marriage will suffer are the very people who cause their suffering. There is a letter George Washington wrote to a group of Jews in Rhode Island in 1790 that, unfortunately is seldom quoted. It talks about toleration and bigotry, and says in part: “All possess alike liberty of conscience and immunity of citizenship,” Washington wrote, “It is now no more that toleration is spoken of, as if it was by the indulgence of one class of people, that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent natural rights. For happily the Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens.” He was explaining to a nervous minority population what was meant by provisions in the new Constitution which addressed not only religion, but other forms of bigotry as well. Why are these words not taught in high schools today? I want to cry when I read or hear something like this.
