The Imaginary World of Peter Labarbera

It’s a bit silly to write about Peter Labarbera — kind of like warning people that the homeless man raving at the clouds isn’t really a meteorologist.  But his misinformation occasionally rains down into the mainstream media, so it’s good to flush the sewers every now and then.  His latest message is this, in response to a press release from the Centers for Disease Control:

Dear Readers, once again the reality that Nature itself discriminates against homosexuality breaks through the bureaucracy’s official political correctness on this issue.  Note how the CDC admits that anal sex is a much higher risk activity than other sexual practices.  Yet to teach the special risks of sodomy in schools would be to invite a “discrimination” lawsuit by the ACLU! Homosexual oral sex also is mentioned as a risk factor for syphilis.  So why don’t the nation’s “Best and Brightest” on this issue launch an educational, pro-health campaign against “gay” sex, especially sodomy?

Peter is living in a world of his own invention.  Where does political correctness keep sex educators from saying anal sex is higher-risk than oral or vaginal sex?  Only in Peter’s world.  Where does the ACLU oppose frank teaching about the risks of sex and how to handle them?  Only in Peter’s world.

In fact, here on Earth the ACLU fights against abstinence-only education and struggles for the right to replace it with valuable, fact-based teaching.  Peter has the situation exactly backwards:  it’s the anti-gay forces who frenzy it up when somebody wants to give teens solid information about risk and condoms and sex.

Peter writes pityingly of:

the types who truly believe their own propaganda that “homophobia” helps spread HIV. But the folly of their failed approach is revealed by press releases like that below.

And when you look at that press release from the CDC?  You find this:

Additionally, factors such as homophobia and stigma can prevent MSM [men who have sex with men] from seeking prevention, testing, and treatment services.

Poor Peter.  Shot down by the very document he’s aiming at us.  Apparently our world is so far from his that he can’t see it clearly.  The only alternative is that he’s literally blind to whatever contradicts his bigotry, even when he’s pointing directly at it.  How sad that would be.

Of course, whenever the crazies go after gays because buttsechs is dirty or unnatural or whatever, they ignore two points: 1) buttsechs is not the sine qua non of being gay, and 2) plenty of heteros engage in anal sex as well.

I am, however, of the opinion that if all these crazies just TRIED it, they’d really like it. We could wipe out the straights in one fell swoop if they all just were brave and gave it a shot.

Yep, we have our own Peter Lerbarbera here–County Commissioner Bill James. Some of his finer moments have included that the black community is nothing more than a moral sewer and that homosexuals should be locked up for breaking the law. His latest was an email sent out to his district constintuents reporting that the CDC says that the black community is more likely than any other to have an STD because the black community is promiscuous. What the report actually said is that black WOMEN are more likely to have an std and nothing about ANY group be promiscuous. Amazingly, the county commissioners have done nothing to censure him. Prior to this, when one of the commissioners was relaying a story about her deceased son, who was gay, during debate about continuing the extension of health benefits to county same sex employee partners, he leaned over to her after her speech and whispered with a live microphone so that everyone could hear it, “Really, I didn’t know your son was a homo?”. The result? The commission chair separated the two because of the heated words exchanged. He will never be voted out of office because his district is 89% conservative republican and no one will run against him.
