Do I Choose My Dreams?

If being gay is a choice then why am I gay in my dreams, after I’ve fallen asleep and stopped making choices at all?

Are you going to give us details about your gay dreams?

I always understood the “lifestyle choice” argument to mean that while some people maybe “cursed” with homosexual feelings, acting on them is the sinnful choice. That at least seems to be the official Catholic view. Though some seem to see it more like an addictive vice, acquired through practice, like nicotine or heroin. In their view your dreams would probably a symptom of your addiction, and the “choice” would have been indulging in the act, when first you did.

But isn’t just honouring the argument with any response already giving up too much ground? I mean, just trying to “defend” being gay by pointing out that you may not have had a choice sort of hints at the possibility that you agree that it is itself a bad thing. That, given the choice, you would have chosen differently. That there could be reasons to chose against being gay.

    While there aren’t any.

The whole question of choice reminds me of the debate before the WHO when one delegation asked whether homosexuality was a crime or a disease. The question is wrong, what it implies is already too wrong to even try to answer it.

Very good point and a great perspective that would seem to enlighten many anti-gay haters. However, the whole anti-gay thing is propagated by hatred, self-hatred mostly. These people are not interested in “learning” anything. All they want is their self-hatred vindicated. It’s kind of like the Tea Baggers & Republicans – they aren’t interested in facts, they don’t want their minds changed. They only want their view to be “right”… at ANY cost.
