So we lost the CA Supreme Court fight. Boo hoo. We’ll win the war.

The next step in our battle will be to talk to EVERYONE we know about marriage equality. This video is my first stab at developing a set of answers to our opponents’ objections. I hope it can help prepare people and give them confidence for those one-to-one conversations that will win us equality.

I always get drawn into the this clip from The View, and how Whoopi handles herself in the discussion. She has a great solid demeanor during the whole thing — not confrontational, but not backing off her beliefs. It’s a great little case study for how to talk about marriage equality with people who don’t agree. And while she might not convert the other side, I could easily see her bringing over any undecideds listening in, just with her calm yet forceful, relaxed yet emphatic attitude. It’s an attitude very few people manage to maintain on the CNN/MSNBC/FOX talking-head debates.

TVC: Dishonest or Dumb?

While I was working on this, I found another page on the TVC website that was so filled with lies and distortions that it made me crazy mad. And I’m not talking about differences in opinion, but actual verifiable untruths. In fact, I thought they might be genuinely dumb instead of dishonest because only an idiot could hope to get away with being such a blatant liar. Watch the video before reading further:

I had to cut this from the video to keep it short, but here’s a summary of what TVC’s done here. TVC:

lied about the FBI’s definition of intimidation
lied about the FBI’s definition of simple assault
lied about the FBI’s definition of aggravated assault
lied about the number of heterosexuals included in the 242 hate crime aggravated assaults
invented a definition of “violence” that excludes fistfights, cuts, bruises, domestic violence, and murder
offered distorted comparisons of figures that aren’t in the same category
offered misleading information about what the FBI calls a hate crime
falsely implied that every aggravated assault against an LGBT person in 2007 was classified as a hate crime

And they did all that in just 215 words.

Meet in the Middle

My friend Phillip Minton asked be to pass on information about “Meet in the Middle,” a rally to occur on the first Saturday after the State Supreme Court passes down its Prop 8 decision.

In Fresno.

Yep, not in West Hollywood or Silverlake or the Castro, but in the heart of Yes on 8 territory. This is where we need to make our voices heard. And this will be a great way to do it. There will be transportation assistance and other logistical help to make sure everyone can part of this gutsy state-wide event.
