My boss’s boss has scheduled a Habitat-for-Humanity team-building event next Thursday. The cause is worthy, but my initial reaction was decidedly less so: A 90-minute drive and I’ve got to be there by 8am? [whine] To do manual labor? [whine] And as the group’s resident tall man who works out, guess who they’ll ask to dig [...] Will’s nieces and nephews (he’s got enough to field a baseball team) have started calling me Uncle Rob. It chokes me up. It started with the girls. I’d been showing up at family events for a couple years, but Will’s family is very conservative (as was mine) and I’m not sure anyone officially explained who I am. [...] This morning NOM points its readers to a blog post by Prof. John Araujo, a distinguished Jesuit law professor. Araujo is commenting on Laurence Tribe, a leading (perhaps the leading) liberal scholar of Constitutional Law: [Tribe] also derides the use [of] arguments against same-sex marriage that rely on what he labels “pseudo-scientific claims.” He does not [...] I came across this comment on one of the NOM blogs: Letting lesbians adopt and have children is horrible…Having homosexual male couples is even worse. They are always off and having sex with multiple partners rather than being the parent the child needs. I’d like to ask this of all opponents of marriage equality who are such [...] The National Organization “for” Marriage wants presidential candidates to sign a marriage pledge. Bachmann, Santorum, and Romney have complied. That’s a NOM victory, of sorts, though we already knew Bachmann and Santorum are anti-gay, and Romney would likely sign anything that won him primary votes. Really, though, NOM has shot itself in the foot. This pledge [...] I hardly ever use the word inane. In fact, I’ve never put it in a blog post. I don’t know why. It’s a perfectly good word, meaning lacking sense, significance, or ideas; pointless. I guess I’ve just never been driven to the point where it seemed appropriate. Until now. Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse is NOM’s resident intellectual and [...] Happiness is when reality exceeds your expectations. Apparently the National Organization “for” Marriage has officially lowered its expectations. Over on their blog, NOM is happily touting a new poll in a post called, New Quinnipiac Poll: Majority Does NOT Support SSM: The latest Quinnipiac poll: Would you support or oppose a law in your state that would allow same-sex couples [...] Here’s one hilarious example of entitlement running amok. Over on one of NOM’s websites, an antigay was complaining about how marriage equality hurts his life. The Massachusetts marriage license now says PartyA and PartyB and not husband and wife thanks to SSM. Someone replied: Big deal. Who cares? If this is the kind of thing that keeps you awake at [...] NOM is awfully worried about keeping conservative Pakistani Muslims happy. This is their recent blog entry titled, “Will Hillary’s Pakistani Gay Rights Meeting Sponsor More Terrorism?” Pakistan is not happy about a U.S. embassy-sponsored gay rights meeting, calling it second only to a military drone strike as an attack on Pakistan. We do not concur, but we [...] Maggie Gallagher has written an editorial that seems to denounce everything she stands for. Sadly, I don’t think she understands that. It’s a puff piece, an attempt at high-falutin’ rhetoric with as much substance as cotton candy — no, even less, not cotton candy but flavored air.
